The Social Alliance's mission is to motivate and promote Corporate Social Responsibility, understood as a series of policies and practices related to the key social actors, values, compliance with legal

requirements and respect for people, communities and the environment.

Some of the Alliance's 2005 results can be summed up here:

Strengthening Networks, NGOs and City Halls

  • ·Strengthening the networks and organizations of the third sector in areas of leadership, creation of social projects, as a way to access national and international financing sources. 1,420 people were trained in 30 workshops at the national level.

  • Organizing in June the dinner party celebrating Our Lady of Chiquinquirá with the purpose of thanking companies for their support with the Project of Institutional Strengthening of NGOs, with the premium sponsorship of MOVISTAR and the support of 430 persons.

Consulting

Providing consulting services to companies through 3 social investment workshops, using this strategy so companies can achieve a sustainable development.

Dissemination

With the objective of disseminating and familiarizing people with Corporate Social Responsibility, two inserts were published in the print media, with a print run of 700,000 copies. This project seeks to strengthen the image of socially responsible companies by presenting impacting projects carried out jointly with organizations from the third sector, townships and local governments. Similarly, 110 informative columns were published in these newspapers: El Nacional, Ultimas Noticias, Notitarde and Correo del Caroní.

Events
VenAmCham organized the following events, with the objective of providing a meeting space for the private and public sectors and the civil society and to encourage companies to exercise Corporate Social Responsibility as a competitive strategy and part of business:

  • SOCIAL PERSPECTIVES in March, with the premium sponsorship of the Mercantil Foundation and with the participation of María Emma Jaramillo, Corporate Development Director of the Carvajal Foundation, attended by 729 participants.

  • 5th SYMPOSIUM ON SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: A BUSINESS STRATEGY, on October 17, with the premium sponsorship of Banco de Venezuela and with the participation of the following speakers: Marcelo Linguitte, ETHOS, Brazil; Italo Pizzolante, Pizzolante Strategic Communications; David Acosta, CODENSA Colombia; Miguel Angel Carriles, Cadena Capriles Venezuela; Susana Gregori, Hay Group; José Gregorio Vielma Mora, National Superintendent of the Customs and Tax Administration; Feliciano Reyna, Sinergia; Gustavo Roosen, CANTV and Jonathan Coles, IESA. This event was held at IESA and had an attendance of de 250 persons.

  • COMPANY: ETHICS AND SOCIAL RESPONSABILITY, event organized in the month of December, with the premium sponsorship of CANTV, with the objective of strengthening the conviction that ethical performance within organizations is an essential condition to promote social responsibility initiatives and actions of national reconciliation and cohabitation, with the participation of Professor Fernando Savater and the presentations of Miguel Ignacio Purroy / Banco del Caribe; Carlos Henrique Blohm, C.A./Telares de Palo Grande and Father Luis Ugalde, Director of the Andrés Bello Catholic University, with an attendance of 750 people.

  • Reprinting of the publication CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT, thanks to the sponsorship of Banesco.

  • MEASURING THE RESULTS OF CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT. A TOOLBOX, coordinated and produced by Dr. Mireya Vargas L. and sponsored by the Mercantil Foundation, publication that presents a compendium of the approaches, criteria and tools for measuring the results and impact of the social investment of companies, from a business perspective.

  • Publication of the fourth edition of the DIRECTORY OF THE SOCIAL ALLIANCE, publication that, besides the brief description of 310 foundations and civil associations, includes in its content: the legal framework applicable to private foundations and the practical manual for the constitution of foundations and civil associations, published by Dr. Federico Araujo and Dr. Marieta Fuentes, from Torres, Plaz & Araujo Legal Offices; how to obtain resources for non-profit institutions and the logical framework, both topics addressed by Dr. Carmen Cecilia Mayz; and the formulation of social projects, published by Charo Méndez, at the request of FIPAN, within the framework of the Training and Development Program accredited by the Andrés Bello Catholic University.

Strategic Alliances

  • In September, the PNUD and VenAmCham signed an Agreement Memorandum in order to promote projects and programs in the area of human development through corporate social responsibility in companies that are members of the Chamber, and thus to extend the adherence of the Venezuelan business sector to the World Pact and the Millennium Development Objectives, promoted by the United Nations. The memorandum seeks to offer a cooperation framework and facilitate the collaboration between the parties through joint and mutual support in common interest areas.

  • The 1st College Competition "Promoting Socially Responsible Leaders," in alliance with the International Rotary Club and the participation of 8 higher education institutions, sponsored by the Mercantil Foundation, with the purpose of promoting the analysis of corporate social responsibility among students as a practice for promoting human dignity and the construction of a more just and caring society. Given the success of the 1st Competition, in October the 2nd College Competition was organized with the participation of 21 higher education institutions at the national level, ending in May 2006.

  • The training program in the area of small business for 23 female prisoners from the INOF, in alliance with the Association Damas Salesianas and the Eugenio Mendoza Foundation, with the objective of offering them an alternative for their reintegration in society, strengthening their skills in the area of personal development and providing action tools.

  • Participation in different discussion forums, like: Successful Cases of Social Investment in Zulia State, in alliance with the World Bank, organized at the Rafael Belloso University and the Zulia Chamber of Commerce; presentation in Barquisimeto at the Lisandro Alvarado Central Western University; 1st National Meeting of Volunteers from the Private Company, in alliance with AVAA; Building Bridges among Latin America's Community Centers; Social Perspectives in Barquisimeto; creation of the Social Alliance Committee in Maturín; the 2005 Business Future of the Americas Conference - Bogotá.

  • At the level of committees, special guests in February were Dr. Imelda Cisneros / President of VenAmCham in 2005; in March, Rocío Guijarro, CEDICE; in April, Father Armando Janssens, Grupo CESAP; in May, Enrique Rodríguez, Executive Director of the Social Management School Foundation, assigned to the Ministry of Planning and Development; in June, the winners of the 1st Competition Promoting Socially Responsible Leaders, Andreína Linares from UNIMET and Leopoldo Molina from USB; in July, Luis Horacio Correa, President of CONACUID; in August, Luis Vicente León from Datanalisis; in September, Joaquín Leiva from TV Familia; in October, we had the pleasure of welcoming William Brownfield, US Ambassador; in November, Luis Pedro España, UCAB; and, to wrap it up, in December, Dr. Juan Carlos Escotet from Banesco.

  • The results obtained are due to the direction of Edward D. Jardine, President of the Social Alliance Committee.
